Arrival Day,
Arriving on Faial

After meeting at Horta Airport we drive to our accommodation close to the Marina.

In the early evening we let ourselves drift through the marina and maybe get into conversation with circumnavigators on their way from America back to Europe.

We have our get together dinner in the historic Peter Sport Café, where adventurers and tourists mingle.

Day 1: Faial –
Hike Caldeirão, 4,8 km & Capelinhos Museum visit

In the morning we will hike around the Caldeira crater, offering us both far views to the neighbouring islands of Pico and São Jorge and a view on an untouched fauna and flora in the 400m deep crater.

Hydrangeas in various shades of blue, but also in pink, white and lilac line fields, paths and houses for kilometers.

In the afternoon we explore Capelinhos, the youngest landmass of Faial resulting from a 13 month volcano eruption starting September 1954. We visit the well done museum and gain a deep insight on the evolution and history of all the Azores Islands.

Day 2: Pico –
Hike Caminho das Lagoas

We take the 7.30 am ferry from Faial to our second island – Pico.

Pico’s intense basalt black and the bright green everywhere will enchant us immediately.

Today we will do a long hike through Pico’s interior and its pure state. Along the trail, we will pass many lakes and also some high-altitude pastures.

The early evening we will relax at our Hotel with direct sea access. Maybe we can even already spot some whales.

Day 3: Pico –
Whale watching in Lajes do Pico

Today we will explore the maritime life of the deep Atlantic.

Leaving the dark-profiled paradise of basaltic landscapes and silky vegetation of Pico behind, a rough sea awaits us to introduce us to some of the most spectacular aquatic specimens, freely swimming in their element. Away from the masses and close to the desirable peace, we will be guided by marine biologists nature, sharing their knowledge and passion for Pico, its fauna and flora, that it becomes contagious. We will meet whales and dolphins in their integral beauty of their natural habitat.

Day 4: São Jorge
Hike Caminho das Fontes & Swim at ‘Simão Dias’

We take the 8.40 am ferry from Pico to our third island – São Jorge.

Today we will hike the ‘Caminho das Fontes’ with nice views on Pico and Mount Pico and in the afternoon we will relax at a unique large natural pool ‘Simão Dias’ well protected from the open ocean at the north coast.

The early evening we will relax at our Hotel. Maybe we’ll see how the last rays of sun beautifully color Mount Pico.

Trail Info

Day 5: Terceira
Algar do Carvão and Biscoitos

We take the 11.20 flight from São Jorge to our fourth and last island – Terceira.

We start our discovery of Terceira with the descent into the largest ‘inactive’ crater of the island ‘Algar do Carvão’. Back at the surface, we will do an easy hike from the crater to Furnas do Enxofre.

In the afternoon we relax at the largest natural pool we will see on our trip – ‘Biscoitos’.

Trail Info

Day 6: Terceira –
Hike Mistérios Negros, 4,9 km

We will hike through about 5 different distinct flora and climatic zones including a Japanese cedar stand, both mature and young – with the occasional fabulous orange colouring – pastoral, cultivated grassland, Azirean heather, juniper, laurel and basalt field.

After our hike, we will visit the nearby Gruta do Natal (Christmas Cave), the remains of an underground lava stream.

In the evening we will explore the Old Town of Angra do Heroismo, maybe closing the day with a swim at the beach in front of the Hotel.

I spent a week hiking with EveryDayMe in the Azores. The trip really exceeded my expectations! We visited three of the Azorean islands, each with a special unique character and vibe. The hiking tours offered very diverse experiences at different physical levels. The most challenging one was the climb to the highest mountain in Portugal, Mount Pico. It was a very rewarding hike with spectacular views onto a number of different islands. All accommodations were chosen with very good taste.  Marc is a great tour guide who was always very attentive and flexible to cater to all the wishes of the group. Everything was very well organized and all transports went very smooth. Marc loves food and arranged some extraordinary culinary experiences in fantastic restaurants. It was a great pleasure to spend a week with Marc as our guide. He is a wonderful person and the conversations we had during our trip were really interesting and rewarding.

I can highly recommend visiting the Azores with EveryDayMe!

The Azores – a wonderful experience!

In only seven days I had the pleasure to explore three of the nine Azores islands somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. As a passionate hiker my personal highlight was conquering the summit of Pico (2351 m), the highest mountain of Portugal. I felt like walking on extraterrestrial ground like on Mars given the volcanic nature of this impressive rock spit out by the brute force of mother nature roughly 250 thousand years back. Faial with its beautiful views from the caldera walk and the modern museum close to the moon-like area emerged 1957 out of nowhere made me humble and thankful for every breath I may take on this wonderful planet. Finally, São Miguel rewarded me with tasteful sea food at beautiful locations.

Although the experience of the Azores was great and recommendable for itself it will be unforgotten for the wonderful people I was allowed to join. Marc is such a warm-hearted empathic person who took away all stress from me. Even more, he made me feel completely comfortable just being myself. Even some of my tics, like sometimes having my own pace during the hikes running ahead was no issue at all. It was really every day me. Michael is a lovely person and a gifted photographer who has the talent to show parts of the soul in his pictures. With him behind the lens everybody and everything calms down and reveals its beautiful secrets.

Why an exclusive group of 8 participants?

Our experience shows, that a group size of 8 is a good number to create the right mix of variety and intimacy in the relationship. This group is an important part of your experience. There will be moments of silence where you will listen inside and moments where you will inspire each other with your insights and experiences – old and new ones.

Do I need to be an super experienced hiker?

We walk exclusively on paved hiking trails or along long beaches. The subsoil changes between earth, gravel and sand. A good level of fitness is required to be able to enjoy the daily stages. Good surefootedness is required for most of  the ascents and descents.

Do I have to struggle with my heavy backpack?

No, we recommend not packing more than 10kg in your backpack. Just indulge in minimalism and only pack what is absolutely necessary (see our packing list). A liberating experience of traveling with less luggage. If this is not for you and you don’t want to do without anything, just bring a separate suitcase. We transport this from accommodation to accommodation and you pack what you need for the day in your backpack every day.

What equipment do I need?

We have put together a packing list for you. As said, you are welcome to bring more and we will transport that for you.

How am I accommodated?

We stay in 3* Hotels and B&Bs. You have a comfortable bed and your own bathroom every day. Most of the accommodations are embedded in the small towns along the Fishermans trail and – if you like – also invite you to explore them in the evening.

Is the best time to visit the Azores?

The Azores in April hosts the ‘Big Three’ – blue, fin and sei whales – so although you can see cetaceans year-round, April may be the best time for wildlife trips. The winter rains, now slowing, have painted the scenery in vivid shades of green that are dotted with pretty spring flowers. And flight and ferry timetables are full – another reason why April is a good month to visit the Azores.
